  • With the Support of Rosneft, Research on the Continental Shelf in the Arctic Ocean continues

With the support of Rosneft within the framework of the strategic initiative of the Ministry of Natural Resources of Russia Geology. The Rebirth of the Legend the exploration of the continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean continues.

The day before, a specialized scientific research drilling vessel Bavenit left the port of Murmansk for the Eastern Arctic. The large-scale geological expedition was organized by the Arctic Scientific Center of Rosneft and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use (Rosnedra). Field work in the Laptev and East Siberian seas will be carried out by the forces of the Federal State Budgetary Institution VNIIOkeangeologia.

The vessel Bavenit, on board of which work is underway, is equipped with innovative domestic equipment for the tasks of the expedition. Unique technologies for drilling and geophysical studies of wells in difficult geological and climatic conditions were developed within the framework of the Rosneft stratigraphic drilling project, which has been implemented in the northern seas of Russia since 2020.

The Arctic region, possessing enormous amounts of natural resources, is of strategic importance for the Russian Federation. In 2017, specialists of the Federal State Budgetary Institution VNIIOkeangeologia estimated the initial total geological hydrocarbon resources of the marginal seas of the Arctic Ocean within the exclusive economic zone at 173 billion tons of conventional fuel. The purpose of the expedition is to obtain samples of shelf rocks (core) to build a reliable geological model of the studied regions, as well as to estimate the extent of the Russian continental shelf in the Arctic Ocean. The comprehensive research program will last until midSeptember and will end at the port of Pevek.
