Canadian Trillion Energy Discovered a Light Oil Field in Southeastern Turkey
Canadian Trillion Energy has discovered a light oil field in southeastern Turkey, in Şırnak Province. This was reported by the company’s press service.
The discovery was made using the Çetinkaya-1 (C-1) well, drilled on the M47C3,C4 block. Oil accumulations with a density of 32.4° API were identified in carbonate formations of Cretaceous age — the Beloka formation and the Mardin group.
The M47C3,C4 block is located approximately 11 kilometres southeast of Turkey’s largest onshore oil field — the Şehit Aybüke Yalçın field, where oil is also produced from carbonate reservoirs of the Beloka formation and the Mardin group.
According to the company, the reservoir characteristics at C-1 (oil density, porosity, fracture permeability) are comparable to nearby producing fields, confirming the high commercial potential of the North Lead structure.
Key technical results:
- oil-saturated intervals confirmed in the Beloka and Mardin formations;
- fractured reservoir composed predominantly of dolomites (77% dolomite) contains light oil (32.4° API);
- effective oil-saturated thickness — 38.0 metres with a total formation thickness of 76.6 metres;
- average effective porosity (PHIE) — 5.5%;
- average water saturation (Sw) — 25%.
The best reservoir interval (7 metres) is characterised by:
- PHIE up to 8.1%;
- Sw up to 8%;
- oil saturation above 90%.
The best oil-saturated intervals identified by well logging (2418–2448 metres) have not yet been fully tested.
The C-1 well was drilled on the eastern flank of the North Lead structure, near the spill point, suggesting that only a small portion of the hydrocarbon column has been penetrated. A sidetrack well (C-1ST) is currently planned to be drilled on the crest of the structure, approximately 75–100 metres higher, where significantly greater oil saturation is expected.
Trillion Energy International Inc. specialises in oil and natural gas production in Europe and Turkey.
The company holds:
- 49% of the SASB natural gas field, one of the first and largest offshore natural gas development projects in the Black Sea;
- 19.6% (excluding three wells with a 9.8% share) in the Cendere oil field;
- in Bulgaria, the Vranino 1-11 block, a prospective unconventional natural gas asset.
The M47C3,C4 block (Eastern block)
- is located in the central part of the Cudi-Gabar region, and until about five years ago, oil production in this part of Turkey was minimal;
- covers an area of approximately 450 square kilometres;
- near the block is the Şehit Aybüke Yalçın field (discovered in 2021) with estimated reserves of 1 billion barrels of oil with a density of 41° API, as well as the nearby Şehit Esma Çevik field with reserves of 250 million barrels;
- today, these assets located in close proximity to the block produce more than 81 thousand barrels of oil equivalent per day;
- the exploration period for the subsoil block has been extended until December 16, 2028.
