Gazprom Neft Conducted Large-Scale Environmental Monitoring of the Arctic Nature

Scientists from Gazprom Neft assessed populations of birds and marine mammals along the Northern Sea Route, having studied a section more than 2 thousand kilometres long — from the Arctic Gate oil terminal in the Gulf of Obto the Barents Sea.

Biodiversity monitoring is one of the key areas of Gazprom Neft’s environmental programme. During research, the company’s specialists use scientific methods that ensure the accuracy and comparability of long-term data. Environmentalists, biologists, and zoologists conduct observations of Arctic nature from research vessels and using digital equipment. For example, the use of autonomous camera traps allows specialists to continuously study animals in their natural environment: the camera independently takes a photo when a built-in sensor detects movement.

In 2025, along the Arctic expedition route, scientists encountered about 20 species of birds and mammals, including rare species listed in the Red Book. In the Barents Sea, researchers observed beluga whales and walruses, and in the Kara Seapolar bears. Along with fauna monitoring, environmentalists also conducted water studies in the Gulf of Ob.

“Expeditions of our environmental specialists confirm that natural diversity and favourable conditions for animals are preserved in the Gulf of Ob. We regularly monitor various species and collect scientific data to analyse dynamics. Modern technologies help to quickly obtain reliable information about the state of flora and fauna, which allows us to develop our projects without disturbing the natural balance,” said Gazprom Neft Head of Industrial Safety Viktor Sorokin.
